What is gate battery backup?
Gate battery backup is a set of rechargeable batteries inside or beside the gate operator that takes over when line power goes out, so the gate keeps opening and closing until power returns or the batteries run down. Most current LiftMaster DC operators include it; older AC openers usually don’t. With PG&E Public Safety Power Shutoffs and winter storms, it’s one of the most useful upgrades for Bay Area gates. Eagle Automatic Gate & Door adds, tests and replaces backup batteries and installs openers with backup built in.

These LiftMaster operators keep running when the power is out. We size the model to your gate.
Replace an old AC opener.
Older AC openers can’t run on batteries. A new DC LiftMaster brings battery backup, smoother motion and modern safety sensors.
“Every fire season we get calls from people stuck behind their own gate during a power shutoff. Battery backup is the fix, and it’s usually quick.”
Will my gate open during a PSPS power shutoff?
Only if your opener has working backup batteries. Most current LiftMaster DC openers do, but batteries wear out after a few years, so test yours before fire season by switching off the operator’s power and running the gate. Older AC openers have no backup and won’t move without power; you’ll need the manual release. We can add or replace batteries or upgrade the opener. Call our specialist to check yours.

Still not sure? Call us and describe what your gate is doing.
How long does gate battery backup last?
It depends on the operator, batteries, gate weight and accessories. Published figures range from dozens to hundreds of cycles; we test yours on site.
How often should gate backup batteries be replaced?
Usually every few years, sooner in heat. A gate that slows down in an outage is a sign the batteries are worn.

If it’s a DC opener designed for it, often yes. Older AC openers usually need to be replaced to get backup.
How do I open my gate if there’s no backup?
Use the manual release on the operator, then move the gate by hand. We show every customer how on install.
How much does a battery backup upgrade cost?
It depends on the opener and whether batteries or a new operator are needed. We give a written price after checking it.
Is battery backup work covered by a warranty?
Our work is backed by a parts and labor warranty, and LiftMaster equipment carries the manufacturer’s warranty.
