Quick answer

Why wood on a steel frame?

A custom wooden gate is a driveway, side or garden gate faced with real wood, usually redwood or cedar, and built to your opening. All-wood gates sag and twist as the wood moves, so Eagle builds ours on a hidden powder-coated steel frame: you get the warm look of wood with the strength to stay square and carry an automatic opener. We build them in our own shop and install, stain and repair them across the Bay Area.

Wood care

Will a wooden gate last in the Bay Area?

Yes, with the right build. The steel frame stops sagging, and a quality sealer every couple of years keeps the wood from graying and checking. Near the coast or in full sun, composite boards give the same look with almost no upkeep.

Automatic wood gates

Make it automatic, now or later.

Thanks to the steel frame, a wooden gate can carry a LiftMaster opener just like a metal one. We add battery backup, photo eyes and a keypad or intercom.

I recently had an automatic gate opener installed by Eagle Automatic Gate & Door, and I’m very pleased with the whole experience. Out of the four companies I got quotes from, theirs was the most reasonable, by far. But what really made the difference was Richard. Straight shooter, no games.

We absolutely love our custom fabricated gates! We couldn’t find anything that fit the sizes and quality we were looking for. We spent hours online and didn’t want to risk the quality on an overseas gate. Matt and the team did an amazing job.

I needed someone to come out the same day to fix a gate issue caused by a tenant, and this company responded immediately! They sent someone out the same day, Sam fixed the sensor. He was on time, communicated very well throughout the process, and got everything working quickly. I highly recommend them.

Wood that stays straight

Will a wooden gate warp or sag over time?

An all-wood gate almost always does. Wood swells in winter rain and dries out in summer, and a wide leaf slowly racks under its own weight. That’s why we build every wooden gate on a hidden welded steel frame and fasten the boards to it. The wood can move a little without pulling the gate out of square, and the hinges carry the frame, not the boards. Call our specialist to see samples.

Straight answers

Wooden gate questions.

Still not sure? Call us and describe what your gate is doing.

What wood is best for a gate in the Bay Area?+

Redwood and Western red cedar resist rot and insects and take stain well. Near the coast or in full sun, composite boards give a wood look with almost no upkeep.

How much does a custom wooden gate cost?+

It depends on the size, wood, frame, hardware, finish and any opener. Every project starts with a free visit and a written quote, and financing is available.

How do I stop a wooden gate from sagging?+

Build it on a steel frame with proper hinges and a solid post. For an existing gate, we can add a steel frame, re-hang it or replace the post.

How often should a wooden gate be sealed?+

Usually every two to three years, sooner in full sun. Sealing keeps the wood from graying, checking and soaking up water.

Can a wooden gate be automatic?+

Yes. With a steel frame it carries a LiftMaster opener like a metal gate, with battery backup and safety sensors.

Can you match my existing wood fence?+

Usually yes. We match board style, spacing and finish, or rebuild the fence section next to the gate.

Do you repair wooden gates?+

Yes. We fix sagging, broken boards, latches and hinges, and can add a steel frame to an old gate.

Is a new wooden gate covered by a warranty?+

Yes. Our gates and installations are backed by a parts and labor warranty.
