AC vs DC gate openers: which one is right for your gate?
The real differences between AC and DC gate openers: speed, battery backup, solar, duty cycle and heavy gates. Plus what to expect when you switch from AC to DC.
How they differ
- Power: AC openers run on 115 or 230 volts from the house. DC openers run on 24 volts through a charger and batteries.
- Outages: DC openers keep running on battery. AC openers stop unless a separate backup system is added.
- Solar: DC openers can be charged by a solar panel. AC openers can’t.
- Motion: DC motors ramp up and slow down at each end of travel, which is gentler on the gate and hinges.
- Duty cycle: DC openers are built for frequent, back-to-back cycles, which suits busy driveways and HOA entries.
- Muscle: AC openers are often chosen for very heavy, very long or industrial gates.
Why a DC opener may feel slower
If you replace an older AC opener with a DC model, expect the gate to open and close a little slower. DC motors trade top speed for soft starts, smooth stops and battery operation. The gate isn’t underpowered; it’s designed to move gently. Our installer notes on the LiftMaster CSL24UL page explain this in more detail, along with how far the speed can be adjusted.
Which one should you choose?
Choose DC if
- You want the gate to work during power outages
- There’s no easy power at the gate and solar makes sense
- The gate runs many times a day
- You want quieter, smoother operation
Consider AC if
- The gate is very heavy or very long, beyond what a DC model is rated for
- It’s a commercial or industrial gate with high power needs
- You already have the right AC wiring and backup in place
What we install
We’re an authorized LiftMaster dealer and keep LiftMaster operators and parts in stock. For most homes we recommend a DC model like the CSL24UL for slide gates or the LA400UL and CSW24UL for swing gates. Compare models on our slide and swing operator pages.
Questions
Are DC gate openers weaker than AC?
Not for typical residential gates. They’re rated for a set gate weight and length, and within that rating they move the gate smoothly. Very heavy or long gates may call for AC.
Will my gate work in a power outage?
With a DC opener and healthy batteries, yes, for a number of cycles. An AC opener stops unless backup power is added.
Can I convert my AC opener to DC?
You replace the operator rather than convert it. In most cases the gate, hinges and much of the wiring can stay.
Why is my new DC gate slower than the old one?
DC motors are designed for soft starts and stops and battery operation, so they usually run a little slower than older AC openers. Speed can often be adjusted within limits.
