Why won’t my automatic gate close? 9 common causes

An automatic gate that won’t close, or opens again right away, usually has a simple cause. Nine things to check, from photo eyes to batteries, and when to call a technician.

Check these first

  1. Something in the way. Look for branches, trash bins, gravel or a car parked over the gate’s path or the exit loop.
  2. Photo eyes. Wipe the lenses, check both are lined up and their lights are steady. Low winter sun can also blind a photo eye for part of the day.
  3. Safety edge. A cut, crushed or disconnected edge on the gate makes the opener reverse or refuse to close.
  4. Exit sensor or loop. If something metal sits on the driveway sensor, the opener thinks a car is leaving and holds the gate open.
  5. Remote or keypad stuck. A remote button jammed in a pocket or a stuck keypad keeps sending “open.”

If the gate still won’t close

  1. Batteries or power. On DC openers, weak batteries can make the gate stall or stay open. Check that the charger has power and the breaker is on.
  2. Manual release. If someone released the operator to move the gate by hand, it has to be re-engaged.
  3. Timer-to-close turned off. If the gate used to close by itself and now doesn’t, the auto-close timer may have been reset after an outage.
  4. Gate hardware. A sagging swing gate dragging on the ground, a slide gate off its track or a seized roller makes the opener sense resistance and reverse.

Read the opener’s error lights

Most LiftMaster gate operators show a diagnostic code or flash a light pattern when something’s wrong, and the manual lists what each code means. Note the code before you call. It often tells a technician exactly which part to bring.

When to call a technician

  • The gate reverses with nothing in its way, after you’ve cleaned and aligned the sensors
  • You hear grinding or clicking but the gate doesn’t move
  • The gate is off its track, a hinge is broken or the gate is dragging
  • The opener shows an error you can’t clear
  • Anything involving wiring, the control board or the motor

We offer same-day automatic gate repair when the schedule allows, and keep LiftMaster parts on the truck.

Keep it from happening again

A yearly gate tune-up covers sensors, batteries, hinges, rollers and limits before they cause a no-close day. If your opener is older and keeps failing, it may be time to look at opener repair or replacement.

Questions

Why does my gate open again right after closing?

Usually a photo eye, safety edge or exit sensor is being triggered. Check for obstructions, clean and align the sensors, and look for anything metal sitting on the driveway loop.

Can I close my gate by hand?

Yes, using the operator’s manual release. Turn off the power first, release the operator, move the gate, then re-engage it.

Why does my gate only fail in the afternoon?

Low sun shining straight into a photo eye can blind it. A small hood or a slight change in angle usually fixes it.

Is it safe to bypass the safety sensors?

No. Bypassing them removes the protection that stops the gate from hitting people and cars, and current openers won’t run automatically without them.
