What happens to an automatic gate in a power outage?

How automatic gates behave when the power goes out, how battery backup works, how to open a gate by hand with the manual release, and how to keep the batteries healthy.

DC openers with battery backup

DC openers already run on batteries that a charger keeps topped up. When the power goes out, the gate simply keeps working. How many cycles you get depends on the battery size, the gate’s weight and what else is connected, like an intercom or lights.

When the batteries run low, many openers can be set to finish in a chosen position: open, so cars can get out, or closed, to keep the property secure. Ask your installer which setting yours uses.

AC openers

AC openers run straight off house power, so they stop when it goes out. Backup is possible with a separate battery system, but many homeowners with older AC openers choose to upgrade to a DC model instead. See AC vs DC gate openers.

Opening the gate by hand

  1. Turn off power to the opener, or unplug the batteries if the instructions say to.
  2. Find the manual release. Arm operators usually have a release key or pin. Slide operators have a release lever or key on the operator.
  3. Release the operator and move the gate slowly by hand.
  4. When power returns, re-engage the release and run the gate once with nothing in its path.

Keep the release key somewhere you can find it in the dark. If the gate won’t move freely once released, stop: something may be binding, and forcing it can damage the gate or the opener.

Keep the batteries healthy

  • Test the gate on battery once a year: switch off the power and run it a few times.
  • Replace the batteries every few years, or sooner if the gate slows down on battery.
  • Keep the charger and battery box dry and free of insects.
  • Solar gates: keep the panel clean and unshaded. See solar in the shade.

Adding backup to your gate

If your gate stops every time the power goes out, we can add or replace batteries, or upgrade the opener. See gate battery backup.

Questions

How long will my gate run on battery?

It depends on the battery size, the gate and the accessories. A healthy system typically handles a normal day’s cycles through a short outage. Heavy use or old batteries shorten that.

Will my gate open by itself when the power goes out?

Only if it’s set to. Many DC openers can be set to open or stay closed when the batteries get low.

How often should gate batteries be replaced?

Every few years, or sooner if the gate slows down on battery. We test them during every maintenance visit.

Where is my gate’s manual release?

On the operator itself. Arm operators usually use a key or pin; slide operators have a lever or key. Your opener’s manual shows its exact location.
