Will a heavy-duty operator fix my gate that drags?

No, and it’s the most common mistake I see. If a heavy gate drags, the problem is the track, rollers or guide, and a stronger motor just pushes harder against it until something wears out. Before we install an HDSL24UL, we roll the gate by hand. It should move with steady pressure on a clean, level track. If it doesn’t, we fix the rollers or track first. That’s what makes the operator last.

Troubleshooting

Common HDSL24UL problems.

Quick, safe checks for the most common issues. Never bypass a safety device or force a powered gate.

Still not working? Our technicians service the HDSL24UL every week.

Ask a gate specialist
The operator beeps and the gate won’t move

Likely causes: LiftMaster operators stop and sound an alarm after repeated obstructions: a blocked sensor, a binding gate or something in the track.

Safe check: Clear the gate’s path, then reset with the reset button or a remote.

The gate opens, then reverses

Likely causes: A dirty or misaligned photo eye, a pressed or damaged safety edge, or force settings that no longer match the gate.

Safe check: Wipe the photo-eye lens and reflector and check nothing touches the edge.

It runs slowly or won’t run on power

Likely causes: A worn backup battery, a charger or power-supply fault, or a tripped breaker.

Safe check: Check the breaker and the operator’s power switch.

It stops short or overruns

Likely causes: Limits that have drifted, a stretched chain, or a gate that has shifted on its track or rollers.

Safe check: Look for debris in the track. Don’t adjust a powered gate.

Remotes or keypad stopped working

Likely causes: A dead remote battery, lost programming, or a receiver or antenna problem.

Safe check: Replace the remote battery and try a second remote.

Grinding or clunking noise

Likely causes: Chain tension, a worn sprocket or idler, a bent gear rack, or failing gate rollers.

Safe check: Stop using the gate if the noise gets worse.

Where can I find the LiftMaster HDSL24UL manual?+

LiftMaster publishes the HDSL24UL installation manual, wiring information and UL 325 troubleshooting guide on its HDSL24UL product page, linked in the Manuals section above.

How big a gate can the HDSL24UL handle?+

LiftMaster rates it for slide gates up to 3,000 lb and 75 ft long. For lighter gates the CSL24UL (1,500 lb) is usually enough; for heavier ones, the IHSL24UL goes to 5,500 lb.

Does the HDSL24UL have battery backup?+

LiftMaster’s HDSL24UL page doesn’t list battery backup. Ask us about backup power for your site before you order.

Can I adjust the speed on the HDSL24UL?+

Yes. It is a variable speed operator, set between 0.5 and 1 ft per second. Because speed changes how hard the gate hits an obstruction, have a technician make the change and re-test the safety devices.
